I still remember how discontent I felt when I was assigned a literature to read in school as I was not interested at all. I had no desire to read it and now I hardly recall the name and the content of the literature. However, after I've entered the real world as a freelance translator and project manager, I finally realized how important it is for us to stop and appreciate the literature in the hustle and bustle of daily life.
"Literature is the art of discovering something extraordinary about ordinary people, and saying with ordinary words something extraordinary." - Boris Pasternak.
By reading the literature, it gives the chance for us to see things from someone else's point of view and opens our eyes up to the truth everyone is unique and interesting person.
If you’re passionate about literature or literature translation, Asymptote is the journal you can’t miss. They have translated many different literature from various languages into the English. Because of their hard work, we can appreciate the languages well translated in English now even the literature was originally written in the language that we can't understand such as Spanish, French, German, and etc.
Lee Yew Leong is the founding editor of Asymptote. Based in Taipei, he is the author of three hypertexts, one of which won the James Assatly Memorial Prize for Fiction (Brown University). I'm really inspired by his efforts and contribution in literature translation.
